He was the 8th child of Thomas Houlahan and Margaret Gleeson. His father died when he was only 16 and his mother was left to raise the family and run the farm. They were a large family with 11 children. There was Ellen, George, James, Thomas Jr. Timothy, Margaret, Sister Ste Anne, Matthew Austin, Catherine, John Emmett and William. Matthew was killed in action during WW1 on September 27th, 1918 at the age of 26 while in the 7th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment). He is buried in France in the Ontario Cemetery, Sains Les Marquion, Nord, France. His name is inscribed in the First World War Book of Remembrance which is guarded in the Memorial Chapel in the Peace Tower at Parliament in Ottawa, Ontario. Through the Page Turning Ceremony, held daily at 11:00 a.m., the page on which he is commemorated is shown every 15 September.

ONTARIO CEMETERY, SAINS-LES-MARQUION Nord, France

Sains-les-Marquion is a village and it lies approximately 2 kilometres south of Marquion, which lies on the main straight road from Arras to Cambrai. The Ontario Cemetery lies to the south of the village. The cemetery was made after the capture of Sains-les-Marquion by the Canadian Division on September 27, 1918. The Cemetery was enlarged after the Armistice and now covers an area of 949 square metres. It is enclosed by a rubble wall.
