He arrived in England on March 3, 1918, and was assigned to the 20th Reserve Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. On August 8, he was transferred to the 22nd Battalion, crossed over to France on the 10th, and found himself on the front lines by the 15th.
Alfred was severely wounded in Chérisy on 28 August 1918 and he was evacuated to England on the following days. He was hospitalized there until he was repatriated on 18 August 1919 and disabled, he was admitted to the Veteran’s hospital at Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue. He was released from military service as unfit for service on 3 March 1920, and he died six month later of empyema due to his wounds.
