Son of William Duncan Campbell and Mabel Nellie Smith, of Toronto, Ontario. William Duncan served in France during the First World War with the 15th Battalion, CEF, service number 799028, and he was wounded in action at Vimy, on 10 April 1917; he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

William Robert served in Canada, in England, in Egypt and in Libya. He had 532 days of service, including 255 overseas.
