Son of Joseph Chandonnet and Marguerite Rocheleau of Shawinigan Falls, Québec. Brother of Private Laurier Chandonnet who fought in Europe during the Second World War. He survived the war.

He arrived in England on 21 December 1943 and in Italy on 3 March 1944. ‘At 4 o'clock the enemy artillery opened fire. From the first salvos, the lead platoon suffered two direct hits and lost twelve men, including three killed: Lance Corporal Santerre and Privates Jacques and Chardonnet.' History of the Royal 22nd Regiment, page 296.
