Son of Gabriel John Caswill and Emma Brooks. Husband of Marjorie May Taylor, of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Brother of Arthur James Caswill, service number 2007608, killed in action in France on 3 October 1918 while serving with the 9th Battalion, Royal Canadian Engineer Corps, during the First World War.

Gabriel John served with the Winnipeg Grenadiers (MG) – NPAM – from 1938 to September 1939, then with the regular forces in Manitoba, in Jamaica with Force Y, in Hong Kong with Force C. He had 838 days of service, including 59 overseas.
