Son of Colin Campbell and Margaret Middlemiss, of Toronto, Ontario.

He was sea cadet, then soldier with the 2nd Battalion, Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada – NPAM – from 31 March 1935 to 17 April 1942.

His two brothers served overseas during the Second World War; Peter Campbell, with the Royal Air Force since 1936, and Walter Herbert on board minesweeper HMCS Winnipeg (J337); they both survived the war.
