He took the COTC course when he was a university student in Montreal. He was a gunner, service number 233, with the 7th Field Battery of the Royal Canadian Artillery in Montreal from May 31, 1937 to October 30, 1940.

He served in Canada, Great Britain and Malta. He had 1,480 days of service, including 1,048 overseas.
