Son of Frank and Annie Shiels. Brother of Janet Fay, Peter Cecil and Mrs. Art Chalmers. Private Shiels had service in Canada from 19 October 1941 to 14 June 1942, the United Kingdom from 15 June 1942 until 10 June 1944 and Northwest Europe from 11 June 1944 to his death.
