On July 23, 1942, the Onondaga was sailing from Nuevitas, Cuba, to Havana, Cuba, unescorted and unarmed, when it was torpedoed at 10:22 p.m. 5 miles (8 km) north of Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, in the Caribbean Sea. The explosion destroyed the center of the ship which sank in less than a minute with 6 officers, 13 crew and one passenger, position 22°40'N/78°44'W. The survivors, 8 officers, 25 sailors and one passenger were rescued the next day by the Cuban fishing vessel Laventina, which landed them in Punta San Juan, Cuba.
