Son of Howard Benjamin Cassidy and Jessie Theresa Donovan, of Newcastle, New Brunswick.

Brother of Private Harry Byron Cassidy, regimental number 793238, who fought in France in the First World War with the 26th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He survived the war.

On September 20, 1941, at 1:51 a.m., 275 miles (443 km) northeast of Cape Farewell, Greenland, she was torpedoed by U-552 and sank immediately, position 61°36'N/35°07'W.
