On 11 September 1941, at 2:12 am, the Gypsum Queen was hit in the stern by a torpedo launched from U-82, while sailing with convoy SC-42. She sank in less than a minute south of Cape Farewell, Iceland, position 63°05'N/37°50'W. Of the crew, nine sailors and one gunner lost their lives. The captain, 22 crew members and three gunners were rescued by the Norwegian merchant ship Vestland and landed in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
