In Halifax, Nova Scotia, he embarked on 15 July 1940 on the MV Batory for Great Britain. He landed in Glasgow, Scotland, on 1 August. On 15 June 1943, he set sail again to take part in the landings in Sicily on 10 July. On 3 September, he landed on the Italian mainland. He was killed in action on 19 May 1944 during an assault on the Hitler Line in the Liri valley. He was buried on the 28th north-east of Pontecorvo, before being exhumed and reburied in Cassino. He had served 1,458 days, including 1,406 overseas.
