Son of Joseph Colin Child and Bertha Margaret Gartrell, of Vancouver, British Columbia.

In the First World War, Joseph Colin fought in France as a private with the 29th Canadian Expeditionary Force Battalion, service No. 76019, and served from November 9, 1914, to February 1, 1918, to be recruited into the Royal Flying Corps, and was promoted to Second Lieutenant.

He completed the COTC course at the University of British Columbia. He served solely in Canada, for 370 days. He was reported missing during a reconnaissance flight.
