Samuel Robert served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps – NPAM – from 12 May 1938 to 7 March 1940. Enrolled with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he was transferred to the 1st Battalion, Winnipeg Grenadiers on 20 October 1940 to fight in Hong Kong with Force C. He had 652 days of service, including 53 overseas.
To commemorate his sacrifice, the Government of Manitoba named Carberry Lake, located south-east of Lake Du Bonnet, in his honour in 1973.

Private Samuel Robert Carberry was 20 years of age when he was killed in action on the 19th of December 1941 when the Japanese attacked Wong Nei Chong Gap to split the defence of the Island of Hong Kong. Province of Manitoba Memorial Geo-naming - Carberry Lake (50º 07' 35”; 95º 31' 23”) northeast of Betula Lake is named in honour of him.
