Son of Philip Sheridan and Lily Brown from Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Husband of Hilda Rheubottom from Barton, Lancashire. Father of one child.

At the beginning of February 1943, the Kalliopi broke its moorings in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and set sail with convoy SC-118. At 7:35 am on 7 February, U-420 torpedoed her 600 miles (966 km) south-southwest of Iceland. Shet sank by the stern 25 minutes later, in position 55°27'N/26°08'W. The attack killed two sailors and a gunner. The 32 other crew members and one gunner were rescued an hour later by the US Coast Guard vessels USCGC Bibb (WPG-31), which took on five, and USCGC Ingham (WPG-35), which took on board the 27 other shipwrecked crew members, five of whom died of their injuries.
