Son of James Gunn Chisamore and Wilhelmina Flemming, of Port Arthur, Ontario. Brother of Leading Aircraftman James R. Chisamore, Royal Canadian Air Force; Sergeant Edward H. Chisamore, Private Leonard Chisamore, Canadian Army; and Sapper Harold Chisamore, Royal Canadian Engineer Corps. They all survived the war.

Cousin of Corporal Murray Hector Robert Chisamore, service No. B-146646, of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, killed in action on April 7, 1945, in the Netherlands.

Joseph served in Canada and Britain. He had 513 days of service, 255 of which were overseas. His Halifax Bomber was substantially damaged during the raid on the German city of Wanne-Eickel. He crashed on return in England.
