Edgar Doiron
Mr. Doiron was born in Shippagan, New Brunswick. His father was a fisherman. He spent his summer vacations harvesting oysters and picking blueberries. From 14 to 19 years of age, he worked in logging camps. He enlisted when Army recruiters came to the Shippagan church. Edgar and his friends went without telling their families. Mr. Doiron was almost rejected because he did not meet the weight requirements, but after talking to the doctors, he was accepted into the military. He is the only member of his family to have gone to Europe and he participated in major battles in France, Belgium and Holland, the most memorable being D-Day. His narrative is often touching and provides food for thought.

C'était au mois de septembre. Entre la grange et la maison. Il y en avait trois ou quatre qui mangeaient là. Moi j'avais été au soleil avec un groupe, il y en avait un chaque bout et puis il y a un obus ; parce qu'il y avait des espions partout, ils pouvaient être habillés comme en soldat. Des espions allemands pouvaient être habillés comme un soldat. On les voyait pas. Puis il y a tombé un obus, les autres avaient pas été blessés mais lui, il avait, c'est pareil comme si tu aurais eu pris un couteau puis ôté tous les organes avec, tout pareil. Là il nous regardait puis il riait et quand on l'a pris pour le mettre sur un brancard, il nous regardait puis il riait puis là tu as vu les yeux lui ont fermé quand l'air s'est mis dedans.
Je pense qu'on avait été une semaine sans manger. Non on avait pas touché. Tous les soldats avaient été traumatisés. Moi j’avais été une semaine, je pense, sans manger.
