Transformed into a troop transport, on 6 January 1943, at around 6pm, the Benalbanach was the target of two torpedoes fired by a German aircraft. They exploded and the ship broke up and sank immediately east of Algiers, Algeria, with 57 crew members and 340 soldiers. The captain swam for three hours and died just moments before being rescued by a destroyer.
