Baptized Joseph Denis Rosaire Lorenzo Gilbert. Son of Georges Gilbert and Marie Fortin of Saint-Prosper, Dorchester, Quebec.
Enlisted at the 2nd District Military Depot in Toronto, Ontario, he sailed for Great Britain on November 25, 1943, arriving on December 2. On February 17, 1944, he set sail again with Force M for the Mediterranean. He landed on the Italian mainland on March 3 and, on the same day, was transferred to the Royal 22nd Regiment. On May 19, 1944, he was wounded in the face during combat while advancing toward Rome. On July 19, 1944, he was involved in an accident and died on July 21, 1944, at 4:45 a.m. at the 15th Canadian General Hospital.
