Baptized Joseph Edward Alphonse Joly. Son of Alphonse Joly and Rose Alba Brissette of St-Félix-de-Valois, Joliette, Québec. Brother of a private who fought during this conflict.

Enlisted at the 5th District Military Depot in Quebec City, Quebec, he sailed for Great Britain on February 16, 1944, and arrived on the 25th. On March 29, he was transferred to the 4th Battalion of the Royal 22nd Regiment and to the 1st Battalion on April 9. Assigned to Force M in the Mediterranean, he embarked again on May 26 and landed on the Italian mainland on April 9. He was seriously wounded in the abdomen on September 4, 1944. He was first reported wounded, then missing, and finally killed in action on September 4. He was buried in Pesaro, grave number 2. On May 31, 1945, his body was exhumed and reburied at the British Empire Cemetery in Gradara, grave number I.G. 36.
