Son of Émile Martel and Constance Copeman, of Montréal, Québec.
He served in Québec, in Newfoundland with Force W, and in Hong Kong with the Royal Rifles of Canada, Force C. He had 496 days of service, including 57 overseas.
His brother, Private Clifford Omer Martel, served with the Canadian occupation forces in Germany in 1945. His brother-in-law, Captain Jacques Pruneau also served in the Second World War and survived the war.

Memorial
Corporal GEORGE HENRY MARTEL is one of 20 members of the Royal Rifles of Canada, Royal Canadian Infantry Corps who are commemorated on this panel of the Sai Wan Memorial. He was one of 290 Canadian soldiers killed during the defense of Hong Kong, from December 8th to December 25th, 1941. -
Inscription
Dedicatory inscription of the SAI WAN MEMORIAL. This memorial bears the names of more than 2,000 Commonwealth servicemen, including 228 Canadians. -

Corporal GEORGE HENRY MARTEL was reported as Missing in Action in the Canadian Army's 243th overseas casualty list of the war published in the Globe and Mail on January 8, 1943. -
