Baptized Joseph Adélard Jean Louis Garant, he served under the name Jean Louis Garant. Son of Guillaume (aka William) Garant and Marie Grondin, from St-Georges, Beauce, Québec. He always stated that he was born on January 22, 1923.
He had previously enlisted on August 14, 1940, in Quebec City, Quebec, with the 16th Company of the Canadian Forestry Corps, serial number E-38102. Due to his young age, he was discharged from the army on April 10, 1941, in Quebec City. On May 15, 1942, in Montreal South, Quebec, he re-enlisted in the Châteauguay Regiment, service number D-51341. The army used both service numbers on the forms, one on one form and the other on another. On June 29, 1943, he embarked with Force M to take part in the Allied landing in Sicily, Operation Husky. He landed on the beach on the 11th. On September 10, 1943, he set foot on the Italian mainland at Reggio di Calabria. He fell ill on September 12 and was evacuated to the 2nd Military General Hospital in Tripoli, Libya, where he died of pleuropneumonia and osteomyelitis of the sternum. He was buried there on October 1, 1943.
