SOLA CHURCHYARD Norway
Sola, situated on the south-west coast, is 13 kilometres south of Stavanger. It is the site of Stavanger airport, which was captured by the Germans on 9th April 1940 and was raided constantly by the Royal Air Force, being the nearest aerodrome in Norway to the home bases in Scotland. It was heavily defended and many of the crews were shot down.
The war Graves Plot, where the casualties are buried, is at the airfield and maintained by the Royal Norwegian Air Force Station at Sola, the SOLA CHURCHYARD in which it is located being the responsibility of the Sola Parish Council. Two of the airmen from the United Kingdom are unidentified. The War Graves Plot, which is beside the church, faces the main path.
