Wellington HE 177 of 428 Sqdn had taken off at 22.07 hours on a mine laying trip. The pilot tried to land at RCAF East Moor on its return but overshot the runway and crashed at 02.35 hrs. Four were killed in the crash. The aircraft ended up at right angles to the runway in the fields beyond the end of the runway.
Along with F/O Douglas were the following crew: F/S (P) Alexander Simpson, 21, from Oxbow, Sask.; F/S (N) Stanley Frewen, age 23, Winnipeg; F/S (WAG) Alfred J. Grenon, age 25, Neepawa, Man.
The rear gunner, Sgt. A. J. Howes, survived the crash.
