Son of Thomas Hammond Avery and Mabel Mart Wallace.

On March 15, 1940, the Melrose sank near Ostend, Belgium, in the North Sea, after hitting a mine was laid on March 9, by the German ship Schiff II, position 51°21'N/02°13'E. Seventeen sailors lost their lives.
