Son of John Nathaniel Buchanan and Mary Eula Williams, of Jordan Branch, Shelburne, Nova Scotia.

On May 29, 1942, at 2:17 a.m., the Western Head was sailing unescorted when she was torpedoed by U-107 50 miles (70 km) east of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and sank in Windward Passage, position 19°57'N/74°18'W.
