Son of Richard Carberry and Mary Elizabeth Sceviour, of Newfoundland. Husband of Violet Mary Carberry, of Corner Brook, Newfoundland.

His name is also commemorated on page 274 of the Merchant Navy Book of Remembrance.

On July 23, 1942, the Onondaga was sailing from Nuevitas, Cuba, to Havana, Cuba, unescorted and unarmed, when it was torpedoed at 10:22 p.m. 5 miles (8 km) north of Cayo Guillermo, Cuba, in the Caribbean Sea. The explosion destroyed the center of the ship which sank in less than a minute with 6 officers, 13 crew and one passenger, position 22°40'N/78°44'W. The survivors, 8 officers, 25 sailors and one passenger were rescued the next day by the Cuban fishing vessel Laventina, which landed them in Punta San Juan, Cuba.
