Son of Crawford Elmer Conrad and Ethel Marion Lohnre, of Petite Rivière, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

On 27 December 1940, the Ardanbhan was sailing with convoy OB-263 when she was torpedoed by the Italian submarine Enrico Tazzoli 235 miles (378 km) north-west of Rockall, between Iceland and Ireland. She sank with her 40-strong crew.
