Son of Thomas William and Ethel Fisher. Husband of Dorothy Ellen Ward.

On 4 March 1943, at 6.09 am, the City of Pretoria, sailing without escort, received two torpedoes from U-172, west-north-west of the Azores, position 42°39'N/36°46'W. The cargo ship sank immediately with her captain, 108 crew members, 24 gunners, 7 passengers and 5 apprentices. There were no survivors.
