Son of Frederick Samuel Gabriel and Elizabeth Jane Youden, of Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
Brother of Able Seaman Gordon Gabriel, regimental number P/JX-247959, killed in action on 28 January 1945, while serving aboard HMS Diadem (84), Private William Alfred Gabriel of the Newfoundland Regiment, Private Harold Herbert Gabriel, regimental number 33738123, and Seaman Herbert Valence Gabriel of the SS Theris. The latter three survived the Second World War.
Rose Castle was torpedoed at anchor, awaiting convoy WB-9, by U-518 off Bell Island, Conception Bay, Newfoundland, position 47°36'N/52°58'W.
