On 2 December 1942, the Amarylis was en route from Kosseir, Egypt, Aden, Yemen, to Durban, South Africa, when she was torpedoed at 5:40 pm by U-181 some 140 miles (225 km) south-southeast of Lourenço Marques, Mozambique, position 28°14'S/33°24'E. She sank very quickly with the captain, 26 crew members and two gunners. The 8 surviving crew members were rescued by the Portuguese sloop Gonçalves Zacro on 8 December, which took them back to Lobito, Angola.
