His full name is Charles A. Gosse.

Son of Thomas M. Gosse and Sarah Martin of Torbay, Newfoundland.

On 22 October 1941, at 1:42 am, the Darkdale was torpedoed and sunk by U-68 while at anchor in Jamestown, St Helena Island, position 15°55'S/05°43'W. Of her crew, 37 sailors and 4 gunners lost their lives. The captain, 5 crew members and 3 gunners were not on board at the time of the attack, except for two who were rescued by harbour craft after jumping overboard.
