On 12 February 1942, the Azalea City left the port of Port of Spain, Trinidad, for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when she was torpedoed on the 21st by U-432 125 miles (201 km) east-south-east of Ocean City, Maryland. At 2.42 am, a third torpedo sank the ship, in position 38°00'N/73°00'W. The captain and 30 crew members lost their lives. Having been reported missing on 13 February, the naval authorities used this date to record the deaths of the sailors.
