Burial/memorial information
On 8 December 1943, the Daisy Moller left Colombo, Ceylon, for Chittagong, Bangladesh, via Vizagapatam, India. On 14 December, at 4.20 am, 3 nautical miles (3.5 miles/5.6 km) off Coconada on the Indian coast, in the Eastern Ghats region of the Bay of Bengal, she was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine RO-110, position 16°21'N/82°13'E. The lifeboats were deliberately rammed by the submarine, which had surfaced, and then opened machine-gun fire on the survivors. Of the crew, 55 were killed (49 crew members, 4 gunners and 2 passengers). Of the 16 survivors, 13 ran aground in the Krishna River delta in India around midnight on the 17th after drifting 92 miles (150 km). Fishermen recovered the 3 other shipwrecked sailors in the same area. Sixteen other sailors were recovered in Machilipatnam, India, on the 18th.
