Son of Edward Emmett Hughes and Mary Ann McKenna of Shamrock, Queens, Prince Edward Island.

On 16 February 1942, the Ramapo was sailing unescorted from Bermuda to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, when she was torpedoed at 6:56 am by U-108 180 miles (290 km) north of Bermuda, position 35°10'N/65°50'W. The 38 crew members lost their lives, 4 in the explosion and the 34 others lost at sea.
