Son of Jean-Baptiste Jalbert and Célestine Ouellet of Rivière-au-Renard, Gaspésie, Québec.
On 13 September 1942, at 6:34 am, the Nimba, sailing unescorted and unarmed, was torpedoed by U-515 while enroute from Paramaribo, Suriname, to Trinidad in the North Atlantic. She sank in one minute, in position 10°41'N/60°24'W. The captain, 18 crew members and one sailor of the SS Workaway lost their lives. The 12 survivors were picked up by the American destroyer USS Barney (DD-149) at around 6:30 pm the same day and were landed in Port of Spain, Trinidad, the following day.
