He served with the 48th Highlanders of Canada, from 28 May 1940 to 21 December 1940, then with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in Toronto.
Severely wounded in action on 25 December 1941, he escaped the St. Stephen Hospital massacre, and was admitted, on the 28th, to the Queen Mary Hospital, where he died of his wounds and illness. He was buried on the side of a steep hill at the Bowen Road Hospital cemetery, and was reburied in Sai Wan, Hong Kong.
