Baptized Herbert Frederick Sweetman. Son of Philip Norwood Sweetman and Della Ethel May Sullivan, of Port Daniel, Bonaventure, Québec. His brother, William Ernest Sweetman, service number 450971, served with the Fusiliers du St-Laurent during the Second World War, and his sister, Ethel Jean Sweetman, service number W312954, with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Women's Division). They survived the war.

Herbert served in Québec, in New Brunswick, in Newfoundland with Force W, in Hong Kong with Force C, where he died as prisoner of war. He had 823 days of service, including 387 overseas.
