Son of John Franklin Lancaster and Sarah Jane Palin of Kamloops, British Columbia. John Franklin enlisted in the Canadian Army on 24 October 1904 for an indefinite period.

A member of convoy SC-48, the Vancouver Island was torpedoed at 22:49 on 15 October 1941 and sank quickly at 23:17 West of Ireland, position 53°37'N/25°37'W.
