Son of John Lawrence Long and Edith Alice Wilson of Grange-over-Sands, Lancashire, England. During the First World War, John first served with the Royal Navy, regimental number 229606 from 25 May 1917 on board HMS President II and Nairana. In the same year he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps as a pilot. He was demobilised on 28 October 1918.

At 0:15 am on 29 October 1942, the Bic Island was torpedoed and sunk by U-224 southwest of Rockall, an isolated rock between Ireland and Iceland, position 55°05'N/23°27'W.
