His birth was registered under the name Dan Alexander Murray McDonald.

Son of John A. MacDonald and Kathleen A. MacDonald of Whitney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

On 22 March 1944, at 9:47 am, U-802 launched three torpedoes into convoy SH-125 and a fourth at 9:49 am. Only the Watuka was hit and sank south-east of Halifax, Nova Scotia, in position 44°30'N/62°51'W. Two crew members lost their lives. The captain, 22 sailors and 2 gunners were rescued by the Royal Canadian Navy's HMCS Anticosti (T-274).
