On 28 July 1942, at 8 h am, the U-754, which had surfaced, cannoned the Ebb 45 miles (72 km) south-east of Cape-au-Sable, Nova Scotia, and sank her after firing around fifty 88 mm cannon shots, position 43°18'N/63°50'W. The captain and four sailors were killed and nine others were injured when they boarded lifeboats. The three surviving officers and nine sailors were rescued after fourteen hours adrift by the British destroyer HMS Witherington (D76), which landed them in Boston.
