Son of Anthony Wallace McDougall and Rosalia Helen Burke of Main-à-Dieux, Cape Bretron, Nova Scotia. Brother of Sarah Josette McDougall, of Main a Dieu, Nova Scotia.

The Nyland ran aground on the western reef of Torran Rocks, Iona, Hebrides Islands, Scotland. She slipped and sank on 5 December 1940, taking the lives of six of the twenty crew members.
