Son of Mr. and Mrs. John McIsaac, of Sydney, Nova Scotia. His full name is Michael J. McIsaac.

On 20 September 1941, at 3:27 am, the MV Barbro was hit by two torpedoes from U-552. Her cargo of oil caught fire. At 4:30 am, U-69 attempted a coup de grâce, but failed. The captain and 33 crew members were burnt to death by the flames. The ship sank east of Greenland, in position 61°30'N/35°07'W.
