Son of Ivan Daniel MacPherson and Kathleen McPhee of Caledonia, Prince Edward Island. During the First World War, Ivan enlisted on July 31, 1915, at Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, with the 2nd Battery Canadian Siege Artillery No. 6, regimental number 92815, replaced by M-10349, of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Sergeant with the 98th Battery Canadian Siege Artillery, he was wounded in action on October 27, 1916 at Longueville, Seine-et-Marne. Repatriated to Canada on 15 July 1917, he was demobilized on 11 February 1918. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Rose Castle was torpedoed at anchor, awaiting convoy WB-9, by U-518 off Bell Island, Conception Bay, Newfoundland, position 47°36'N/52°58'W.
