Son of Edward Mallay and Julia Hartson of Marystown, Burin, Newfoundland.

On 23 January 1941, the Langleegorse was en route from Durban, South Africa, to London, England, when she was attacked by a German Condor aircraft about 200 miles (322 km) west of Ireland in the North Atlantic. Her entire crew of 36 sailors lost their lives.
