On 8 September 1944, Empire Heritage was part of convoy HX-305 heading from New York to Glasgow, Scotland, when at 5:51 she was torpedoed by U-482 north-north-east of Tory Island, Ireland. At 5:59 am she was hit by two more torpedoes and sank in position 55°27'N/08°01'W. The SS Pinto stopped to pick up the survivors and was also torpedoed. Of the Empire Heritage, 112 people lost their lives and on the SS Pinto 19, including its captain. The survivors were rescued by HMS Northern Wave (FY153) and landed in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Later, 5 survivors were located and recovered by the British corvette HMS Inman (K571) and also brought back to Londonderry on the 13th.
