John McCallum was the sole Canadian on a 166 Sqdn Lancaster bomber which took off from Kirmington, Eng. at 21:25 on the 10th of April 1944 to drop mines in the waters of Danzig Bay. It was attacked by a Bf 110 nightfighter while flying at 5500 metres over
Denmark. It crashed into Sejero Bay at 00:06 hrs killing all on board. McCallum's body washed ashore near Yderby, Denmark on 12 May 1944. It was identified by local officials and buried the same day.
The bodies of the rest of the crew eventually washed ashore over the next few months and were buried close to where they were found. Details of this crews fate are found on the website Airwar Over Denmark.
