Son of Effie (née Smith) Nicholson would died suddenly at Whiteley Bay, East Yorkshire on 13 March 1944 whilst serving with the Voluntary Aid Detachment. He was born at Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Husband of Christine Nicholson who died on 27 December 2003 aged 91 while residing at Stornoway, Isle of Lewis (after 60 years as a widow) and father of two daughters; Mrs Mary Macleod and Mrs Effie Macleod. Both daughters are living on Isle of Lewis. He was the brother of Effie, Donald and Angus. Able Seaman Murdoch Nicholson was lost on July 11, 1943 while serving on the SS California which was sunk off the coast of Portugal. He is memorialized as Murdo on a white family headstone at Sandwick Cemetery near Stornoway. Three others from the Outer Hebrides were lost on this ship.

Murdoch Nicholson is commemorated on the Halifax Memorial for merchant mariners lost or buried at sea.
