On 28 November 1942, HMT Nova Scotia was sailing from Port Twefik, Suez, Egypt, to Aden, Yemen, then on to Durban, South Africa, with 6 passengers, 11 servicemen, 134 South African guards and 780 Italian civilian prisoners, when she was torpedoed at 7.15 am by U-177 south-east of Lourenço Marques, Portugal, position 28°30'N/33°00'W. The captain, 96 crew members, 10 gunners, 8 servicemen, 5 passengers, 88 guards and 650 prisoners lost their lives.
